ALPINE STAFF EXAM

 

Our level one qualification is aimed at people who are interested in entering the snowsport industry for the first time.  No teaching experience is required, just good people skills, patience and a friendly personality.

Uncertified instructors who have an offer of employment from an approved snowsport school can attend our alpine and snowboard level one staff exam once they have completed all units of the level one course with their snowsport school.

The one day alpine level one exam is conducted in a training day/continuous assessment format and covers personal skiing ability, demonstrations, teaching and theory.

EXAM PREREQUISITES

  • Be a current member
  • Own the current teaching manual
  • Be employed by an approved snowsport school
  • Be 15 years of age at the commencement of the exam
  • Minimum intermediate skier ability (can ski parallel on blue runs)
  • Have completed all units of the alpine level one course with an approved snowsport school

WHAT CAN I EXPECT ON THE EXAM?

When you attend an exam with us you can expect to receive world class training, delivered with pride, passion and understanding.

During the exam, you will be given numerous attempts at each task creating a relaxed training atmosphere, allowing every opportunity for you to show that you possess the correct skills and understanding to attain the level one qualification.

Below is an example outline so you know what to expect. However, this may change depending on snow and weather conditions at the time of your exam.

You do need to be prepared for a full day (7+ hours) and that you will be outside on the snow for up to six hours.

  • 8:15 am : Meet
  • 9:00 am : Exam (outside)
  • 3:00 pm : Finished on snow
  • 4:00 pm : Presentation

WHATS INCLUDED IN THE PRICE?

The level one staff exam package price includes:

  • 1-day exam
  • Exam materials and an alpine teaching manual
  • One-year membership to the APSI (valid until 31 December)
  • A certificate and pin (on successful completion of the assessment tasks)

The package price does not include lift tickets, meals, equipment or accommodation.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?

Please bring:

  • Your boots, skis and poles. These should be well maintained and tuned
  • Warm waterproof clothing, including a beanie or helmet* and gloves – be prepared!
  • Sunglasses or goggles and sunscreen
  • A packed lunch or money to buy lunch – you need to be able to carry this with you as the group may stop on the mountain for your lunch break

*We recommend that all candidates wear a helmet when participating in courses or exams

FITNESS & SKIING ABILITY

Our ski exam requires you to participate in a day of intensive skiing and learning.

It is therefore, important that you are physically fit and in good condition to be able to take full exam. Safety is our number one concern. The minimum recommended skiing ability to attend this exam is intermediate (i.e. you can make parallel turns on blue runs). However, you don’t have to do anything you feel is beyond your capabilities. Please speak to us if you are concerned about your ability or fitness.
